Florida Couple Busted for Stealing Mementos from Parkland Memorial

A Florida man and woman are facing felony charges after allegedly stealing items from outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

37-year-old Michael Kennedy and 40-year-old Kara O’Neil of Fulton, New York, have each been hit with a charge of suspicion of removing or disfiguring a tomb or monument, which is a felony in Florida.

The arrest report for the couple states that witnesses saw the two removing objects from the monument outside the school and contacted the police.

Responding sheriff’s deputies searched Kennedy and O’Neil’s vehicles and reportedly found dozens of items, including “teddy bears, plaques, and pinwheels,” said local affiliate ABC 10.

Appearing in court on Monday, Kennedy argued that the site was not a tomb or monument; the judge, however, disagreed.

One student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas reacted to the news on Twitter, slamming Kennedy.

“How disrespectful can you be to do this? This is disgusting,” Carmen Lo wrote in a tweet Monday. “First my friends are robbed of life less than 200 feet away from this memorial and now people won’t even let them Rest In Peace? MY FRIENDS ARE GRIEVING and these people are looking for gains.”
