Rush Limbaugh Shockingly Defends NFL Protests

(FreshAsFrankie) President Trump has been pushing the envelope to get NFL owners to end National Anthem protests, so far to the right of the First Amendment, that one of the most right-wing conservative personalities in media is having trouble agreeing with him. Political talk show host Rush Limbaugh spoke out against a potential ban on kneeling during the National Anthem, admitting during his regular broadcast that the aggressive nature of Trump’s rhetoric on the topic is becoming frightening for him.

“There’s a part of this story that’s starting to make me nervous, and it’s this: I am very uncomfortable with the president of the United States being able to dictate the behavior and power of anybody. That’s not where this should be coming from,” Limbaugh said. “Trump is continually tweeting. I know what he’s doing, and I understand why he’s doing it, and his motives are pure; don’t misunderstand. But I don’t think that it is useful or helpful for any employee anywhere to be forced to do something because the government says they must,” he said.

Trump has been tweeting on the status of protests in the league, almost daily. He has praised owners and executives who are reportedly working on policies that will require franchise players to stand, and he’s also reversed his tone with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, with whom he began feuding after his infamous request that owners fire “S.O.B.” players who kneel. It was thought for most of Tuesday and Wednesday that Goodell had announced the enforcement of a protest ban, but the league’s front office issued a statement refuting those reports. “Commentary this morning about the Commissioner’s position on the anthem is not accurate,” the statement read. “The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together.”
