(FreshAsFrankie) The Trump administration recently announced that it would be ending DACA—the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program created to give temporary protections from deportation for almost 800,000 undocumented immigrants. Now, after cutting DACA, Trump has tweeted that the ball is in Congress’ court in terms of legalizing the temporary protection. He tweeted, “Congress now has 6 months to legalize DACA (something the Obama Administration was unable to do). If they can’t, I will revisit this issue!”
Many have chimed in on Trump’s decision to end DACA, including Barack Obama. The former POTUS said, “Let’s be clear: The action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us.”
If Congress or the Trump administration does not take action to legalize DACA, almost 300,000 people could lose their immigration status in 2018. After that, over 320,000 people would be stripped of their status starting in January 2019.
