California NAACP Wants to Get Rid of the National Anthem

California NAACP Wants to Get Rid of the National Anthem
(FreshAsFrankie) When former NFL player Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem, it sparked much support as well as backlash.

Today, NFL players and other professional athletes have joined in on protesting during the national anthem. Even owners and coaches have shown support. Because of the protests, other organizations like the California branch of the NAACP have gone on to question the national anthem — asking for the anthem’s usage to end.

California branch President Alice Huffman spoke to CBS Sacramento, saying “It’s racist. It doesn’t represent our community. It’s anti-black. This song is wrong. It shouldn’t have been there. We didn’t have it ’til 1931, so it won’t kill us if it goes away.”

Huffman spoke on Kaepernick’s protest message, and how it got lost when different parties started to debate about the flag. “This not about the flag. We love the flag. This about a song that should never have been the national anthem,” she said. Huffman went on to say “This country is a country that has shared values, and the more we respect each other, the better off we’ll be as a country.”

Andre 3000: Big Boi is a Better Rapper Than Me

Andre 3000: Big Boi is a Better Rapper Than Me
(FreshAsFrankie) When some people name their top 5 rappers, they often include Andre 3000. He, however, believes his partner Big Boi is the better rapper of the two. The veteran artist and style icon has been keeping a low profile but he did an in-depth Q&A with GQ Style and discussed his career and more.

When speaking about being kids when they first came out, Andre said, “Yeah, running around the world. I can say, man, my partner, Big Boi, has always been on it. He’s sharp. He always knew the right decisions. He got into a real relationship really early. Right before our second album, he had a kid, and he and the girl stayed together, and they’re married now. I did the opposite. I’m all over the place. I never went on real dates. I don’t want to meet anybody’s parents. Like, I’m a f***ing rapper.”

Later in the interview, Andre spoke more about the difference between him and Big Boi, including graduating from high school. He also explained why he thinks Big Boi is the better all-around rapper between the two of them.

“Big Boi is smart as f***. We went to the same high school. I dropped out in 11th grade. Big Boi graduated with honors. When you watch early OutKast videos, Big Boi’s the leader. He always had the confidence, where I was kind of like the shy one. Big Boi can rap better than me—I always said that. If somebody said, ‘Pick who you want from OutKast to go to battle with you,’ it wouldn’t be me. ’Cause like, what I’ma do? Say some mind s***? You can’t have thoughts in a battle—nobody gives a s*** about that.”

Colin Kaepernick Invited to Next Meeting with NFL Owners

Colin Kaepernick Invited to Next Meeting with NFL Owners
(FreshAsFrankie) Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is expected to receive an invite to the next meeting between NFL players and team owners, according to league sources.

“We look forward to him joining the conversation,” NFL vice president of communications Joe Lockhart said in a conference call on Wednesday. According to Lockhart, Kaepernick’s invitation would likely come from the players.

“My understanding is Colin Kaepernick has been invited to these last two meetings. He has been in the discussion with the players’ coalition. Lockhart said. “I expect that he will be invited to this meeting. We look forward to him joining the conversation with the (NFL Players Association), but I don’t have any confirmation that he’s planning to attend.”

Last week, the NFL and NFLPA held a meeting to discuss the ongoing protests during the national anthem. According to Kap’s former teammate Eric Reid, the quarterback did not attend because he was not officially invited by the league.

Kaepernick, who filed a collusion claim against the NFL, remains unemployed. Recently, Kap’s former NFC West rival, Richard Sherman said he believes the league is making an example out of the quarterback. “I think they had a point to make, and they made it.’’

Cam Newton Rolls Eyes at Reporter; Abruptly Walks out of Press Conference

Cam Newton Rolls Eyes at Reporter; Abruptly Walks out of Press Conference

(FreshAsFrankie) Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton‘s contentious relationship with the media was exacerbated Wednesday after the 28-year-old walked out of a press conference mid-interview.

Things were going smoothly until a Charlotte Observer reporter questioned Newton about his team’s offense.

“The big plays, the big chunk plays that get you that energy you’re talking about, is this offense – I know you had several at Detroit and New England – do you guys have the wherewithal to do that consistently, week in and week out?” he asked.

Newton, visibly annoyed, rolled his eyes and simply responded, “Next question.” As a reporter began asking one, Newton abruptly turned and walked away from the podium.

The Panthers quickly went into damage control, chalking the incident up to Newton believing he had answered enough questions for the week.

“Cam didn’t intend to be discourteous toward any specific media member,” the team said in a statement. “In his mind after answering questions for nine minutes he had fulfilled his obligations.”

Newton was last in the news a couple of weeks ago when he mocked a female reporter for asking him about his receivers’ routes.

“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes,” he said.

The comment created an enormous backlash, with Newton facing accusations of sexism.
