Charlottesville, UVA Welcomes Most Diverse Class Amid Civil Unrest
(FreshAsFrankie) The University of Virginia became the focus of national attention before news of a violent march through its grounds by tiki-torch carrying white supremacists was eclipsed by the events of the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville the next day. Many have expressed fears that the city and the university will now have to deal with a ‘scare’ that deters a number of African-Americans from continuing to diversify the 198-year-old institution. Which would be unfortunate news, considering the University is celebrating the incoming freshmen of 2017 as its most diverse class.

The percentage of African-American undergrads entering UVA is going up to 8.5% from 8.1% in 2016. Within the big picture, African-Americans make up an even 9% of all first-year students. But although the increase is much better than stagnancy, or even, a decrease in the statistics, many feel as though UVA is still underperforming in efforts to diversify, especially for a public university in a state where 22% of public high school graduates are Black. Recent events, and the lingering traces of racism that the graduating African-American student body has attested to certainly will not help expedite such endeavors either. It is reported that a group of Black alumni went so far as to issue an open letter to the class of 2021, in which students give testament to the racism he experienced in the UVA school community, all the while encouraging them to support one another as they carry the torch for future Black student bodies.

Last week Black student organizations within the university facilitated their own “March to Reclaim Our Grounds,” and followed it up by serving the administration a list of demands that include a plea for executives at UVA to do a better job of acknowledging its history of perpetuating slavery in its early days. The demand comes on the heels of UVA announcing that it is working on a $6 million memorial to slave laborers who built and for a period maintained the university’s grounds. The memorial is scheduled to be unveiled by 2019.

Is Micheal Jordan Making A “Black Lives Matter” Air Jordan?

Is Micheal Jordan Making A "Black Lives Matter" Air Jordan?
(FreshAsFrankie) There is a rumor that suggests Micheal Jordan might be in the process of making an Air Jordan sneaker just for Black Lives Matter. I wonder what would prompt this? Is it because Black people are being disenfranchised all over? OR is it because so-called White Supremacy is on the rise?

However, Jordan did drop some Black History Month kicks, even though he has not really represented Black Lives all that much.

Protesters Chant “Blood on Your Hands” at Charlottesville City Council Meeting

Protesters Chant "Blood on Your Hands" at Charlottesville City Council Meeting

(FreshAsFrankie) The Charlottesville city council was back in session with a meeting that went left when protesters broke out a banner that read “blood on your hands,” on Monday, August 21.

It was the first time the council had convened since the deadly August 12 rally, and the demonstration’s failed security became the talk of the evening, despite it not being on the meeting agenda. “You had multiple opportunities to intervene, and you did not intervene one time. We told you exactly what you needed to do and you did nothing,” one man hollered from raucous members of the public on hand. The space filled with jeers as the mayor, vice mayor and three council members sprang from their seats and made their exit upon those holding the banner taking to the front of the room. Police then flooded the room and made arrests of three persons, each of which was later released.

After three hours of gripes from the community, surrounding fallout from the white supremacist rally, the council voted in favor of a measure to drape the statues as a gesture of mourning for Heather Heyer. And a measure to expedite the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue as well as a statue of Stonewall Jackson in the city.

White Nationalist on Heyer's Death: "Shouldn't Be Standing Out In Traffic"

(FreshAsFrankie) Viewers of Miami-Dade/ Broward ABC News affiliate Local 10 got an idea of the level of compassion some Nazi and Alt-Right sympathizers have for slain anti-racist activist Heather Heyer, during a recent interview with a self-proclaimed white nationalist.

Local 10 reporter Amy Viteri sat down with South Florida resident Kyle Hanophy, who drove up to Virginia to be part of the “Unite The Right” rally in Charlottesville. Hanophy would have a good idea of the violence that went down, as he was one of the many on hand to document the event via video. However, Hanophy wouldn’t narrow down the experience to anything tragic or heinous to any degree at all. In fact, when asked to speak on his impression of the events that unfolded, Hanophy would say only, “It was beautiful.”

Of course, the topic of 32-year-old Heather Heyer’s murder would come up during the one on one conversation, but to Hanophy’s determination, the incident, which injured dozens more wasn’t enough to change what he thought about the day he had long-anticipated. While he never made an excuse for James Fields Jr.’s use of a vehicle to run over counter-protesters, Hanophy was quick to blame Heyer for her own death, posing that someone in the position she was in “shouldn’t be standing out in traffic, I suppose.”

KKK Leader Calls Univision Reporter N-Word, Threatens to Burn Her
(FreshAsFrankie) Christopher Barker, the leader of the Ku Klux Klan‘s “Loyal White Knights,” appeared on Univision‘s Aqui y Ahora.
During the interview, news anchor Ilia Calderon asked if the white nationalist would chase her out of here, he responded, “No, we’re going to burn you out. You’re sitting on my property now.” As the anchor explains she is probably the first black immigrant on his property, the frame cuts to Barker telling the woman “To me, you’re a ni**er, that’s it.”
