In 2017, Aspire Music, co-founded by Lil Wayne’s manager Cortez Bryant, sued Birdman over unpaid royalties from Drake’s catalog. Birdman has responded with a countersuit that accuses Bryant and Lil Wayne of working with attorney Ronald Sweeney in an attempt to gain a larger share of Drake’s profit.
Aspire claims they discovered Drake and are entitled to 1/3 share of profits from Drake’s first six albums in addition to a share of copyrights. The remainder was to be split between Lil Wayne’s Young Money and Birdman’s Cash Money.
Birdman is seeking unspecified damages for fraud, aiding and abetting a breach of fiduciary duty and interference with contractual relations in the lawsuit. He also wants Aspire’s lawsuit to be tossed.
