According to police reports, Robin McKinzie admitted to authorities she whipped her son with an extension cord and choked him as a form of punishment when the child became angry. Mckinzie told police the boy ran into the kitchen and stabbed himself.
According to Fox13, Memphis police say first responders found the boy bleeding from his chest at the family’s apartment on Saturday, October 28. Police said the boy was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead an hour later.
McKinzie’s family said the child suffered from mental health issues and the stress of raising him weighed heavily on the mother. ““She ain’t that type of person. She loves her son, and she’ll do anything for him–and he loves her,” McKinzie’s sister Tonya Bailey told WMC. “She let stuff just pile up and pile up, and as we know you should not whoop your child when you’re upset,”
McKinzie is charged with aggravated child abuse and remains in jail on $100,000 bond. However, more charges could be added pending the results of the investigation.
