Weed Banned in Chicago Public Housing Ahead of State Legalization
Weed is set to become legal in the state of Illinois on January 1, 2020. However, the Chicago Housing Authority is not rocking with that idea, as they sent a notice to recipients of the housing voucher saying weed would remain illegal on public housing premises.
The notice reportedly said, “The CHA can TERMINATE all assistance … if you, a member of your household, or a guest or person under your control is found engaging in drug-related criminal activity, including the use and/or possession of marijuana for medical or recreational purposes.” The reason that CHA is not allowing the use of marijuana in public housing is that marijuana is still classified as a Schedule 1 drug, which puts it in the same category as heroin.
